In May, Marcelo Mayer was called up to Boston to play for the Red Sox, something that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for his father, Enrique Mayer.
His dad played baseball for Nogales High School and won the Arizona state championship in 1981. With his baseball experience, Enrique often helped coach his son to get to the next level.
“I mean, just the work that me and my dad have put in throughout the years, he’s been my coach through it all,” Mayer told MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “He’s kind of created me into the player I am.”
While some kids don’t enjoy parents coaching them, Marcelo embraced his dad’s style. With the two being very close, he felt that it helped him become even better on the baseball field.
“We’ve always been super close and I think that helped on the baseball field,” Mayer said. “He pushed me really hard. He made sure that I played the game the right way, and if I didn’t, he let me know. There were a few times where, growing up, I’d have a bad attitude and practice with him because it wasn’t going the way that I wanted it to. And he’d make me pick all that stuff up and take everything to the house.”

Now playing professional baseball, Enrique can see how much his hard work has paid off. As he made his way to the Red Sox, Mayer has now used the help of the Boston coaching staff to further his skills.
Though, his dad does still make sure to help coach him in the offseason.
“He’s coached me my whole life, whether that was on a team or if I was playing for another team,” Mayer said. “Every single practice I had my whole life was with my dad. Even to this day, I still practice with him in the offseason.”
